Final Verdict

Ratings are all about expectations, and this stay crushed them. For a sub-$100 stay at a Holiday Inn Express, a good bed, shower and serviceable breakfast is all I expect for a passing grade.

They exceeded expectations at every step. During the check-in reception, the staff proactively asked us if we needed any extra amenities (I’ve had too many trips where I needed to make an extra trip to the lobby, or call for service and wait a while). Member status recognition included a welcome drink (that included beer) and a snack pack or instant noodles and crackers. The room was huge, had a good view overlooking Taichung park, and the shower was awesome with really strong water pressure. Finally, the free breakfast puts many hotels’ paid breakfast to shame with good selection and even a live cooking noodles station.

With all that, they have earned YMMV’s first perfect 5/5 grade!
